Hey Philosophy peeps.
I just got out of the theater, my movie of choice tonight was "Godzilla: Minus One " I'm a fan of the original 1954 film, and spent many hours of my childhood enjoying Godzilla media. I know Godzilla is traditionally an alagory for the atomic bomb and had long been a not-so-subtle anti-war message, so I expected some of this in a new Tohoe Godzilla movie, especially one set just after WW2 like Minus One is.
What I did not expect was how strong the anti-government and pro-freedom message would be. It's very apparent and found throughout the movie. One of the driving factors of the plot is a private, voluntary, citizen-led effort to stop Godzilla. The US and Japanese governments are unable to respond to the threat due to bureaucracy, so the people who live on the coast basically say "Screw you, we will do it ourselves." Several times the characters complain about how the Japanese government treated it's soldiers and how they were forced to do things they thought were wrong. One of the main characters gives a passionate speech about how life was treated as worthless by the Jap government and how it turned it's back on its own people, and that the volunteer force would do things differently. The main character goes on a compelling story arc, which includes themes like the trauma of war, what it means to truly be courageous, and how it's better to live for your family then die for your country. There's even this line, which one character says to another character who feels shame for not having been enlisted and keeps insisting he wants to put himself at risk: "Not having been to war is something to be proud of." It's the most in your face anti-feds, pro-freedom movie I've seen in a long time.
On top of the great messages, the film is a well shot period piece with a solid plot, has well written characters, and of course, Godzilla is cool and menacing as heck. I highly recommend it.
